Why EIG Web Hosting Sucks!

What and Who is EIG?

EIG stands for Endurance International Group, Inc., a web hosting giant, founded in 1997 with headquarters in Burlington, Massachusetts. It achieved its size by acquiring a large number of smaller hosting companies, which it keeps operating under their original brand names. Today EIG is still acquiring hosting companies in the US and internationally. And now the service of their companies is going down! I mean it has become really bad! When asking for support, they waste your time by trying to sell you additional addons and tools that nobody needs, rather than getting to the issue.

So far I’ve counted 80 Web Hosting Companies under the EIG Umbrella!

Why Has Your Web Hosting Service Suddenly Gone Bad?

In the past, we have been hosting our own and our client’s websites mostly on Bluehost and on Hostgator accounts. It was cheap and it was reliable and we had great live and ticket support. Nowadays we just cannot do this anymore! The support on EIG owned webhosting companies has declined to the extent where it got outsourced to India and 60+ minutes of waiting times on live support have become normality. And when you finally have a level 1 support on the chat line, you’ll soon find out that you talk to somebody who wants to sell you something, but doesn’t actually has an idea on how to solve your problem!

After weeks of online research and talking with clients and reading web hosting reviews, we came across SiteGround. When we opened the first live chat, we had competent information within one minute and never heard a sales pitch! Meanwhile we already transferred a few accounts out of Bluehost, over to SiteGround and had nothing but a great experience. They transfer the first website, including email accounts, database and domain for free! For additional sites on the same account, they only charge USD 30/site. And best of all there is no downtime to be expected!

Web Hosting

We now recommend all our current and future clients to move their web hosting affairs to SiteGround! The company is located in Europe and they promised, never to become an EIG Company! We are only working with WordPress and SiteGround offers perfect web hosting packages, tailored for WordPress clients. Have look here: https://www.siteground.com/go/wpclients/ Never again will I or my associates host anything on a web hosting company ran under Endurance International Group, Inc.!

Kindly leave a comment about your own web hosting experience with EIG and/or SiteGround. Let us know if you need any help moving your account.

Facebook Pages Required Secure Canvas URL since October 2011

Attention Facebook Page Owners

Facebook Pages SSL Update October 01 2011

Facebook Pages SSL Update October 01 2011

As I mentioned earlier in my page about how to create a Facebook page, Facebook requires all apps to have a secure URL! What that means for you, is first of all, that it will cost you money and it requires some work as well. Now the good news is that it won’t be very expensive and it isn’t going to be impossible to do. Another point is; it’s well worth the while. With 750.000.000 active users on one single marketplace you simply can’t miss out on all the new possibilities that Facebook pages offer for your business. With the newly implemented iframe instead of the until now used fbml (Facebook Markup Language), Facebook pages allow you to pull content from your own website right into Facebook. This allows you to ad contact forms and squeeze pages right on to your Facebook Page. Facebook Pages are also great to collect leads since everybody who likes your page automatically becomes a lead. You can then send messages to your leads by creating an update on your Facebook Page or by sending an Event to all your Facebook ‘likers’. This way you can inform everybody about updates on your website or about special events and discounts on your products or services.

Secure Canvas URL on Facebook

The downside now, is that Facebook requires all applications (you need to create an application for each iframe page that you create), to be available on a Secure Canvas URL. Basically what that means is that you will have to purchase a SSL Certificate for your domain. This can best be done directly by your web hosting provider, e.g. Bluehost or Hostgator etc. I was writing to all of my web hosting providers to ask them about the costs and what we need to do. The answers was different everywhere. Hostgator charges 50$/year for the SSL certificate plus 24$/year for the dedicated IP address, needed to set it up. Bluehost charges 45$/year for the SSL certificate and 30$/year for the dedicated IP address. As for now, only Hostgator offers a wild-card URL which can be used throughout a web hosting account on different domains. Other web hosting companies offer only SSL certificates for the primary domain on one’s account.

Update May 2016

Web Hosting

SiteGround has setup a nice package including SSL certificate and dedicated IP and a free domain! The SSL certificate and the dedicated IP are valid for one domain on your hosting account. There is also a free domain involved, but unfortunately not anymore for life, but only for the first year now. We here at ONE Internet Marketing think that this is the best web hosting package of 2016, but whatever you do, just don’t host your site(s) on an EIG owned web hosting account!

To get out of the snow and not pay SSL certificates for each and every website you run and/or, what is worst, pay for a separate web hosting account for each website, you can use a Free WordPress Plugin, called Facebook Tab Manager and it is a truly great tool to create Facebook pages right out of a WordPress blog! It’s just like writing content for a page or a post in your WordPress blog. If you don’t have a WordPress Blog installed on your account, it’s easy to do so with a few clicks on any webhosting account today. After you’ve setup your WordPress blog and installed the Facebook Tab Manager plugin, you can create all content for all you Facebook pages from here! This way you will only need one single SSL certificate on one domain to add content to as many Facebook Pages as you wish; the sky is the limit!

Error Establishing Database Connection

Problem: Moving a WordPress Site

Error Establishing Database ConnectionWhen you have to change the name servers to move a WordPress site to another host, many thing can go wrong, but since it’s WordPress there is always a way to fix it. One of the crucial things when moving a site to another domain name, e.g. from a subdomain to a primary domain, is the permalink structure of the website. Once you built your new site on a subdomain and everything looks fine and you’re ready to move the domain to the new site you may be faced with this error message when trying to log in to your WordPress admin as soon as you changed the url on the WordPress settings page. This is because WordPress caches the rewrite rules until something changes in the site that would effect the permalink structure to be rebuilt. The cached rewrite rules will prevent you from logging in to WP admin wit a different domain as it has been built in and you won’t be able to update the permalink structure in Settings -> Permalinks.

Solution: Update the Permalink Structure in PhPMyAdmin

To solve the problem you’ll have to access the WordPress database via PhpMyAdmin over your web hosting account. Once you’re logged in and see your database tables, click to open the wp-options table in the left column and do a search for theoption  key “rewrite_rules”.  Now click on edit and delete the whole gibberish content you will find in there. This is the entry of your permalink structure. No worries, nothing bad will happen to your new website when you delete the content! Once the field is empty and the option is saved, try to open your wp-admin section again. This might require you to empty your browser cache and relod the page with ctrl+F5, but will result in a new permalink structure being built automatically by WordPress, thus you successfully updated the permalink structure without access to your WordPress back-end.

Why Responsive WordPress Themes are Important

What is a Responsive WordPress Theme?

We are (finally) making our website responsive! Since we are too busy working for our clients, we hardly have any time to look after our own website. But now it’s time! One Internet Marketing is temporarily under construction, that’s why it doesn’t look all that fancy right now, but check back in a few days and be surprised! Many people are asking me; “why does my website look ‘crappy’ on my mobile device?”. So let me explain a few things about responsiveness and what it means.

Buy Responsive WordPress Themes on Theme ForestIs your website responsive? Good question; first of all what is a responsive website? What does ‘responsive‘ mean? And what is a responsive WordPress theme? Is the whole responsive thing just a hype to make more money? Quite the opposite is true! Good responsive WordPress themes make your site look good in all different sizes and devices. Users of mobile phones with small screens might not be able to see your site the way you want them to see it, and worst, too small buttons and ‘hard to click’ links will bring frustration to your website visitors, rather than making you any sales! Not enough, your bounce rate will increase (visitors leave your page without clicking any links to open a second or third page on your site), and your website ranking for your best keywords will drop further and further over time.

Keep Your Website User Friendly And Up to Date!

This is NOT what you want to happen! WordPress has become an outstanding tool to get your business in front of an audience. WordPress is also the perfect choice for internet marketing and SEO, but if your theme is outdated, which it probably is if it is older than two years, in other words your website has been built more than 2 years ago and never changed the theme, then you have a problem! A user friendly website, with today’s standards and requirements for social marketing, needs to be responsive. There are basically two ways to achieve this; either you create a mobile application for your site, which can be expensive and time consuming, or you change your WordPress theme to a responsive theme.

Free WordPress Themes

As you maybe aware, almost all free WordPress themes have a ton of disadvantages! This hasn’t changed when responsive themes started to get on the market. Free themes are either spiked with unremovable footer links to affiliate websites, encrypted base64 code that can contain any kind of malware or unwanted links. Free themes can cost you in the end more than buying a well developed responsive WordPress theme from any of the bigger theme websites like themeforest.net or Elegant Themes, come with great theme support, directly from the developers, thus with the guarantee that the theme works as promised! Responsive themes are fully customizable and work on all devices.

Why Should You Care?

Hey, not only are you going to make the internet a better place with a user friendly website, but you’re also almost certainly going to make more money with your site! Your visitors will stay longer on your site, they will look at more than the one page they landed on, your ranking will therefor increase and you will make more sales and your RoI will suddenly look much better! Look at your website’s performance at Google Page Speed and see the user experience on mobile devices.

Do you have the right Web Hosting Account?

Web Hosting

One of the most important factors for a solid online presence and successful internet marketing, is a reliable web hosting account! It is crucial that a business website is available at any time 24/7, so you should look for an uptime of 99.9%!. This is especially important for eCommerce websites and businesses in the tourist industry.

Dedicated Hosting

Dedicated webhosting is faster and more reliable than shared hosting, and you don’t have to worry about other people screwing up your server. The downside is the price. Dedicated hosting is far more expensive. That’s why only a few businesses opt for a dedicated web hosting account right from the start of their Internet presence. A good webhosting account can always be upgraded without downtime, on a later point, once the business grows.

Nevertheless even a small business needs Internet Marketing and it doesn’t need to cost much. As long as the website is up and running – even on a shared hosting account – everything is good. Nevertheless, there are only a limited amount of web hosting companies out there, like for example BlueHost or HostGator, who are as reliable as we require, for us to trust them. We have been working with these companies for many years now and we never had a problem that could not be solved. Both companies offer ‘CPanel’ management, which allows us to do what needs to be done without delay. At the time of writing we give a little more credit to Bluehost because their CPanel version is always recent, while Hostgator still works with an older version that looks a bit clumsy and provides a bit less comfort and functionality.

>Update May 2016 (2 years later): We do not support nor recommend Bluehost or Hostgator anymore! The meanwhile blong to the 80 webhosting companies empire of EIG and their services have rapidly declined. Read more here.

We have also worked with many different webhosting companies, where we have moved in and out in the same week! Hosting account without CPanel are causing a significant slowdown in work progress, especially if it requires ftp uploads. Our experience on these accounts may save you some time.

One web hosting company we can only recommend to stay away from, is Glob@t, another EIG company! They offer extremely strange services, like “Automatic Account Upgrades”, yep, fully automatically does the client get charged 49.95 for something he never ordered, never needs and will never understand what they paid 50 bucks for! All that and more awaits the newbie in the web hosting world, so beware and check back with us if you need more information.

SiteGround is NOT RELATED WITH EIG! And they promised they never would be! Read here why this is important!

Why Use WordPress

Why Use WordPress? – To make the Internet a Better Place!

Why Use WordPressEvery business needs to develop a well designed and professional looking website these days; that’s a fact! Today the internet is more competitive than it ever was and tomorrow it will be even more competitive! Therefore you will need an easily updatable, user friendly, and high ranked website, to be able to succeed with your business and stay ahead of your competitors!

Websites that have been built in pure html or in older and meanwhile unsupported content management systems are loosing continuously on ranking. The previously top ranked websites are loosing ground and old and well situated businesses are starting to struggle because their online income has been reduced drastically. What happened are the latest Google algorithm updates which disqualified ‘over optimized’ websites. If this has happened to you, or if your website is still in old html and has been manually set up, it’s time to budgetize a new website! Do it BEFORE your site drops! Once your site has dropped out of the top 30, your webmaster will have his share on problems to get it back up to the top.

Wordpress Premium Theme TemplatesNow the differences with WordPress compared to a conventional html website or any other modern CMS like Drupal or Joomla, are impressive, to say the least! Websites will be much more efficient, easy to use and to update and you can do a lot more with it. Websites can be changed and get a new layout fast and at any time. WordPress is the CMS we use here at ONE Internet Marketing and I can personally recommend WordPress to anybody who wants to succeed online!

Some of the most important reasons why to use WordPress for your business website.

  • Popularity – WordPress is the most used content management system (CMS) in the world today. Millions of users are using WordPress for their business and private websites. Therefore WordPress has grown a huge community of developers for the core files and an even greater community of people who develop thousands of plugins that can add additional functionality to WordPress. There is not much that I cannot do with WordPress today!
  • WordPress is SEO Friendly – Besides good content, search engine optimization (SEO), is the most important part of your online success. Much of your website’s traffic will come from the major search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing. Getting listed on the first page of these search engines is a challenge and the daily growing competition doesn’t make it easier. Thus, having a search engine friendly business website can help you to reach your goal. There are many WordPress plugins, that have been developed to help efficiently with SEO on your site.
  • Social Media Marketing – An other reason why to use WordPress is social marketing. Websites that have been built in WordPress, have excellent social marketing capabilities, to help build your business on a local level by connecting it to Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites. There are various plugins available for free that will help you to connect all your social site pages to your main website and you can then automatically publish to these social networking sites when you post on your site. This will enable you to ‘share’ more of your content on your social networks, make it ‘viral’ and get more people to come to your website and see what your business has to offer.
  • WordPress is easy to use – You do not need a PhD nor do you need to know much HTML or PHP coding to create your own WordPress website. Everything is coded for you and it is basically a matter of putting everything into place. Instead of building your website from scratch, all you need to do is adding your content, such as videos, images and well written and optimized texts. WordPress makes it easy for you to do everything right that Google requires for a site to be ranked high.

  • Adding New Content – Adding fresh content to your website regularly is very important to maintain a good search engine position for your desired keywords. Using WordPress makes it much easier to manage and update your website content. It will take you just minutes to create new pages or posts with a simple text editor in your website’s admin section.
  • WordPress Support – Things break! That’s a fact. Even though WordPress is the most sophisticated CMS of modern times, sometimes something can go wrong. But no worries, anytime you have problems with your website there is an extensive support system for WordPress available. Simply write your problem into Google search and you will find an answer or a solution that works!
  • Professionally Designed WordPress Theme Templates – You can find hundreds of professionally designed website themes for WordPress for free on the internet. These themes come in a variety of designs, layouts and color and styles. Although the free theme templates can be customized, they may deny you access to certain parts of the theme layout, where they have coded their own links into the theme. To avoid this we strongly recommend to use WordPress Premium Themes for your business website. The cost of a well designed WordPress theme varies between 5 and 100 $. You can usually get what you need for around 50$. With a premium theme you don’t have to leave unwanted links on your website!
  • Functionality – WordPress functionality, that is great by itself already, can be increased through so called ‘Plugins’ are little modules that provide different features for your website. There are already thousands of free plugins available from which you can choose. You can add guestbooks or shopping carts, add the local weather or a tidal calendar, you can add a booking software for your hotel or dive center or anything else you can think of. Plugins can easily be installed from within the WordPress admin section.
  • Easy to make Changes and Update – You can easily freshen up your website with a new layout or design. You can simply choose, upload and activate a new WordPress theme and it will override the previous theme without changing the content of your website. You will have to do some adjustments in design and in the way you have put things to make it look right in the new theme, but nothing you need a PhD for again! Updating WordPress is easy today and mostly a matter of a few clicks. Beware though, there are some plugins that need special attention, you should read the manuals!
  • Blogging Capability – Since the WordPress CMS was originally developed as a blogging software. it can not only manage your whole business site, it also gives you the ability of blogging. Blogging is a kind of writing a monthly, weekly or even daily journal about what is happening in your business. Blogging gives your website new content and has become invaluable for many businesses. ready.

WordPress has more advantages like Web 2 capabilities, RSS feeds, pingbacks, automating publication pinging and much more, but these ten points should be enough to convince anybody who wants to start a business website to at least try WordPress. We recommend that when you are engaging a webmaster for your internet marketing efforts, ask him to build your website in WordPress! It is safe, it is easy to install and it can do all you will ever need!

IWIPA Disabled by Facebook!

As of today IWIPA was disabled on Facebook

Here is what I found on Twitter coming from IWIPA: @facebook We have no idea why you disabled our application #106878476015645 it serves 80K users. This happened 3 hours ago, please help.

IWIPA Disabled - 29. November 2011In the meantime 80.000 users who have created countless great looking facebook pages over the past few month, are back to zero! All our IWIPA Facebook pages have lost their content and the many hours of work, invested into them, almost overnight. IWIPA’s Facebook pages and profile is gone and has also been disabled. Their link to the Facebook app www.facebook.com/iwipa?v=app_106878476015645 will bring you right back to your facebook wall, so I guess they have not only disabled it but redirected the url already to user.php page for good. It would be great to get a statement from Facebook.  And what’s next? What can we use next? And does this mean that applications like IWIPA will no longer be tolerated from Facebook? Then we are back to the nice WordPress plugin but we are doomed to pay for SSL certifications and dedicated domains.

UPDATE! This is a response from IWIPA – “Our application was removed from facebook and we are currently working with facebook to add it back.
For now, you can easily add all your content back to how it was by simply doing the following go here to Fix your IWIPA Page
Click on “add to page” on the left column, add it to our page then go back and it should load all your previous content automatically.
Please help others to find this information faster by bookmarking and sharing this article, Thank You!

IWIPA – Trouble with Facebook Pages

IWIPA App Disabled by FacebookI hate say it but these Facebook business pages are becoming a major pain! You can’t notify anyone who liked your page anymore about updates, events can only be sent to personal friends and not the fans, who actually expressed that they like the page and wouldn’t mind to get notified about updates, by clicking the like button! We can assume so much, I guess, being in an environment like Facebook and given the fact that everyone with a brain should know AND expect by now, the with clicking this Like button, he/she would at least get notified about updates and changes. It was this way when Facebook pages started to become attractive to businesses in the beginning of this year. Likes or Fans could be notified about updates, which did quickly make sense to everybody using it. Facebook user count had a boost out of this and facebook ads started to be interesting for internet marketing too now… but that was then! Now all the great features have been dismantled and Facebook just took down a major application and destroyed the work of 80.000 people by a push of a button.

Has your IWIPA Application Disappeared?

Check out the Fix for IWIPA Pages for now. Until we know more, let’s hope that they can get it back up and cut a deal with Facebook. Otherwise several hundred thousand IWi[pa application based Facebook pages will remain with not much more than their wall posts.

I will keep you informed about the newest development of IWIPA on Facebook here on this site.

Please feel free to leave a comment here. If you’re logged into Facebook you can automatically place your comment on your wall too.

What is SEO?

SEO is What Makes the Difference!

So what is SEO now? SEO is translated to Search Engine Optimization. This obviously doesn’t mean that we try to optimize Google, even though we sometimes would love to. What SEO is, is the art of optimizing a website to appear on the first page of search engine results for a specific key phrase. To understand how this works, we need to to know that Google doesn’t “like” nor “dislike” your website.

Google has only one goal and one goal only: “To serve the best possible results to their audience“!

Although the basics of operation of all search engines seems to be same, there are minor differences between them and these lead to major changes in their search results. Different search engines work with different algorithms and these algorithms are top secret! But the algorithms are not the only difference between search engine. Yahoo and Bing for example are giving more weight to on-page keywords factors, while for Google back links, thus links coming from other websites, are most essential. Another factor is that for Google websites are like wine – the older, the better, while Yahoo and Bing generally have no preferences towards websites with aged domains. This means that it might take more time until your site gets to the top of Google, than in Yahoo or Bing. Fact is that we need to get ALL FACTORS right and not only parts of what SEO is but the full range of SEO to actually get to the top of the search results.

What is the Full Range of SEO?

First of all there are two parts of SEO, on-site SEO and off-site SEO. To optimize your website you will need to get both of them right or your efforts might end up being wasted.

What is SEO – Part 1 – On-Site SEO

Plongee Koh Tao - Google Thailand

Three websites on page #1 !

1. The Right Keyword — The first and most important factor of SEO is to optimize the website for the correct keywords and key phrases. While this may sound obvious, far too many people get this first point of SEO wrong. They assume what people will type in to Google instead of doing some serious research on the matter. With help of tools like Market Samurai, or the free Google Keyword tool, everybody can determine exactly what people are looking for, so there is no need to guess.

2. The URL — The URL or Domain Name of your website must contain your most important Keywords and not necessarily your business name. Your URL should not consist of more than three words if you want fast results. The URL is one of the most important factors of SEO. You can always point or park an other domain onto the same website,e.g.yourbusinessname.com for print purposes like business cards.

3. The Header Title Tag – The second most important part of on-page SEO is the title tag. The title tag of each page of a website needs to be different to the other pages and contain your keywords. Title tags can be created in many different ways, manually or with plugins depending only on the system you are working with.

4. The Meta Keywords, Description and Robots Tag — These tags need to be in the header of every page of your website. Google uses the description tag to show your site in its results, so treat this as optimized sales copy! While Google officially doesn’t use the Meta Keywords tag anymore since many years, other search engine like Bing and Yahoo, still use them to rank your site. The robots tag is where you declare your sitemap and add restrictions for crawling bots.

5. The H1, H2 and H3 Titles –  The page titles are extremely important, they show the search engine the main subjects of your page and determine how the content will be indexed. Make the H Titles keyword relevant.

What is SEO? - Getting 3 sites for the same key phrase on the first page of Google!

Website 1 plongeekohtao.com

6. The Body Text – Each article should have 400 – 600 words. Don’t try to optimize all your articles for one and the same keyword or key phrase! Try to have one main key phrase for each article. The text of your articles must have the keyword or key phrase you want to rank for at the beginning – in the first 50 words, in the middle and at the end – the last 50 words, of your text. The words used in the first sentence are most important because of the Google’s LSI algorithm. Try to place the keywords often but keep your text readable for your users. Don’t overdo it. Remember that your text not only needs to rank high, but it also needs to sell. There is a fantastic little plugin for on-site SEO if you work with WordPress,it’s called SEO Pressor; have a look.

7. Internal Links Text — You need to connect the internal pages of your website together to achieve a higher overall relevance of your website. These internal links must contain your targeted keywords and phrases in the anchor text so that search engine bots can ‘see’ that there is more relevant content to this keyword to be found on the same site. In other words; don’t write one article about dog training but rater write three articles and link them to each other.

8. Outbound Links  — Don’t use more than two or max. three links to other websites in one article if you can avoid it. If your outbound links don’t go to one of your own websites, try to add a rel=”nofollow” tag to the links so you don’t give away link weight to other sites which don’t link back to you. Google requires lots of back links to rank your site high. Nevertheless, a few back links coming from authority sites like .edu or .gov sites, and links from websites with high page rank will rank you higher than 200 links from PR O sites.

9. Images and Alt Tags — All of your images should be named correctly and described via “ALT Tags” with the keywords you are optimizing the particular page for – If your image is uploaded on your web hosting account the file name of the images must also have an SEO optimized name, DC-34675.jpg is not very optimized. If you have an image about a Whale Shark, name it whale-shark.jpg before you upload it. If you are on WordPress, use NextGen Gallery for SEO optimized picture titles and tags.

10. Keyword Density — The density of keywords you use in one article should be between 5 and max 8%, everything more than that will be considered spam and can get you in all sorts of trouble. Also keep in mind that your visitor is supposed to become your customer; so you don’t want to loose him, after all the work you have done to get him here, because of an unreadable, keyword cluttered text. Write informative and use your keywords in a most natural way.

What is SEO – Part 2 – Off-Site SEO

1. Keyword Analysis – The most essential part on what SEO is, to know exactly what keywords your potential customers are looking for. Understanding what keywords and key phrases are searched most, means knowing  what your website should emphasize on.  How to use these keywordswords and terms in your off-site promotion is essential. Every link coming to your site from another website offers so called “link juice” That’s a kind of power drink for your website. If these sites use your keywords in their anchor text when they link to your website instead of e.g. “Click Here” your site will be credited for these keywords and over time rank higher. Keyword analysis is a moving target and it can’t be done once and then be forgotten. Social trends change and adapt. What is hipp today can be hopp tomorrow! Website owners must perform keyword analysis often and adjust their campaigns.

What is SEO? - Opimizing your website in all possible ways!

2. Competition Analysis – Go to a website like Alexa.com or Compete.com which provide free analytical tools to check on your competitors sites. Yahoo Site Explorer (is shutting down soon! – But that’s another story…) for now still is an excellent resource for tracking of your own and of competitor’s back links and determining what directories or paid listings may be beneficial to join. Investigating your competitors and their sites thoroughly is an important part of what SEO is. To achieve the best results on SEO competition analyzes we use Market Samurai which is the ultimate warrior tool for real-time results not only on the best keywords but also on competitive sites.

3. Avoid Duplicate Content – In a modern content management system like WordPress, duplicate content on a website is now taken care of by the unique canonical tag on each page or post. If you are optimizing your site through article marketing, which is a great way forward, because you can create many valuable text links back to your website, helping your search engine rankings greatly. Nevertheless, you should avoid by all means, to republish your own article without re-writing a copy first. Publishing your original text on multiple sites can bring you in all sorts of trouble and your rank could easily be suffering instead of improving.

4. Deep Linking – Deep links are the links which point to a page inside your website but other than your home page. Too many webmasters focus entirely on inbound links to their home page for their most competitive keywords. A far better and much more effective SEO strategy is to create categories and topics on a website and build relevant back links from high authority an high PR sites which target more specific keywords for each category page. While as more links you can get as better it is, still works,  links from authority websites and high page rank websites are clearly more benefices.

5. In-Bound Links Reciprocal Links and other Links – Getting in-bound links from high authority sites on your keyword topic is the best that can happen to your site, and it really counts if the anchor text is made up of your most precious keywords! Providing fresh quality content is still the best way to achieve quality in-bound links from high quality websites. Reciprocal links are links where you get a link from another site and in return give them a link back from your site.  One Way Links on the other hand are links going in one direction only. A one way link coming to your site is worth more than a reciprocal link. And finally there is three way linking, where one of three or more sites site links to the other and gets a link back not from the same site but from another site of this pool. Since none of the sites being linked to, links back to the other site, this creates one way links to each site even though there was no reciprocal link exchange.

6. Social Bookmarking & Social Networking –  Social Bookmarking is basically a collection of online “favored websites” like Digg.com or Yahoo Buzz. Since these sites have high page rank it seems to be a good idea to leave a link to our website on as many bookmarking sites as possible. Facebook Always and again Facebook! Promoting your business and your website with a Facebook Company Page, a Facebook group, and even Facebook Ads can greatly help you connect with your potential customers in a more personal manner, increase traffic to your site, and create brand loyalty, this is what social networking is all about. Your internet marketing strategy should incorporate the potential of Facebook’s social network.  Twitter – Google and Bing are both offering real time search results their search results pages, including live tweets directly from Twitter users. Search engine optimizing your website for Twitter search should become a key part of your social media presence and therefore a part of your SEO plan. Promoting your website and your products on Twitter will over time increase your brand and website recognition and it will improve real time organic search results on these search engines.

7. Press Releases – Press releases are a great way to tell the world about your website and your business. Press releases can contain links back to your website and also directly drive traffic to your site. There are many free press release companies you can find on Google, some of them you can pay a little fee and get your press release published to a broader public. We recommend to write a new press release for your business at least every three month.

What is SEO? - Doing ALL the things right and using the best tools to do it!

8. Modern Times! – Blogs and RSS Feeds – Optimizing a site for search engines also includes optimizing your blog and RSS feed. Each website is different, but typically blogs created in WordPress or other content management systems can be incorporated to maximize your blog posts for inclusion in search enginess and help increase your visibility throughout the web as well as the organic search relevancy of your site for your best keywords. Google bought FedBurner, the worlds largest collection of RSS feeds, a few years back, which means having your RSS feed registered there will help to improve things.

9. Paid Search Engine and Directory Inclusion – Other than a search engine, a web directory is basically a collection of related links. Typically the direct  traffic, coming from web directories is very small, but there are SEO benefits to strategically placing your site on the key business directories for your business. Paying $ to be included into search engine results may be annoying but can be very strategic and also very beneficial for you. One example, I would like to mention here, is the famous Yahoo! Directory. Although the price of 299$/year may seem to be outrageous at first, but it does influence your Google rankings if your site is listed here! It really does. And the best bit is, that once you paid for the inclusion for the first year, Yahoo is not likely to through your site out if you stop paying the following year.  The Google Directory has been shut down for the reason that Google believes that web search is the fastest way to get to information. So there is no way of saying how long these directories will last. One directory that is here forever is DMOZ Open Directory, from where Google also used to collect information for many years.

10. Local Search – Local search has become all more important. For once Google is not only Google.com,it’s also Google.de and Google.fr and all of them will deliver slightly different search results, depending on the location you are at the moment of your search. Optimizing your site for local search involves including your site in directories and yellow pages of the internet. Bing, and Yahoo still allow companies to promote their site through local listings including the company address, company info, and hours of operation.

What is SEO – Conclusion

And this means that the time as come to move things forward and ask yourself some serious questions about your internet marketing strategies, and make sure you get the right answers! Here are the most important ones.

1. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

The most imminent questions must be;

  • Will your potential customers find YOU before they find your COMPETITORS?
  • Are you on the first page of Google when you search for your product and services with the top key phrases?
  • Do you know how many websites link back to your website; more than to your competitors?
  • Is your site really search engine optimized in every possible way?

But not enough with these 4 important questions. If it where that easy, we would soon be out of a job! Once your website is optimized for search engines, you need to do a more things to gain top positions for your website. Therefore there will be a few more questions you must ask yourself here:

2. Selling and Following Up

  • First of all; does your website sell your products and services, or do you only get an inquiry every then and when?
  • Do you have quality content (text, images, video) on your website to attract visitors and keep them busy on your site for as long as possible?
  • Does your website show an appealing description in the search results pages of Google so that people want to click on it?
  • Do you have a good punchline on your website, letting you stand out and making you different from your competitors?
  • Does your site have a great looking landing page where visitors are invited to contact you with only one easy click on a button?
  • Does your landing page have a “Call to Action” button that literally screams “CLICK ME”?
  • Is it from every page ‘one click’ easy to contact you through your website?
  • Is your website easy to navigate, can all important pages be found and accessed easily?
  • Do you still have a business email address ending with @hotmail.com or @yahoo.com or a gmail address instead of your domain name?
  • Can visitors easily sign up for your newsletter and do you send regularly newsletters to your customers?

3. Syndication of your Website

Get it Out there! Once you got the above two points right, it’s time to syndicate your website and use social media marketing and social network marketing to bring your business up to speed;

  • Is there a well visible place on your site, where visitors can sign up for your newsletter, so you can follow up with your offers?
  • Are there social bookmarking and social media buttons or widgets on your web pages, so visitors can tell their friends about you and share your site on their Facebook profile?

  • Are you on Twitter and are you regularly tweeting?
  • Do you write a press release about your diving business at least every three month?

4. Tracking your Results

After you answered all the previous questions about internet marketing, SEO and your website with yes, you’re not yet exactly finished. Now that everything is set to perfectly work, we need to know what’s going on as soon as the first results run in which means it’s time for result tracking, so that your efforts will be rewarded and you can make corrections to your campaigns to make them even more successful. The questions you must ask here are as follows:

  • First and utmost; is the Google tracking code installed throughout your website?
  • Do you have additional and accurate statistics installed for your site?, to not only trust one source of result tracking
  • Do you know where your visitors come from and what pages on your site they stayed on longest?
  • Do you use Google AdWords to test your campaigns and landing pages?
  • Have you got Free Live Chat installed on your website?
  • And finally; can you see the return of interest (ROI) of your efforts in your online marketing campaigns?

Fact is, there are Five Places in the Internet where your business MUST be seen!

Today everyone uses Google, Youtube, Twitter and Facebook to search for whatever they desire, don’t you too? For dive centers, sailing charter, hotels and other accommodation businesses, there is fifth entity that you simply cannot overlook anymore; TripAdvisor! We like to call them the big five. Sure, there is Yahoo and Bing and thousands of social networks around the web, but all of them together will never be able to drive as many potential clients to your website as the big five will do, not when you’re in the tourist industry at least.. Once you have a great website and you are at the first page of Google, on a top spot of Youtube and have a well made Facebook page, all other search engines and many networks will pick your site up automatically or with far less extra effort.

How to get there

Now, if you have come that far in my article and you remain with one last question in your head saying: “How in the world am I going to do all this; I have a JOB!?” No worries, we can help! Our main efforts will always go towards the big five, simply because the majority of the people will sooner or later search there too if they haven’t come there in the first place. Wherever they may search for scuba diving courses or their next diving holiday destination, as long as it is in the internet, they will sooner or later search on Google, Youtube, Facebook or TripAdvisor too.
